These workshops took place on 26 and 27 May 2010, at mima in Middlesbrough and Newcastle’s Live Theatre.

The workshops were led by Lisa Baxter, one of the country’s leading independent qualitative consultants specialising in the arts sector. Lisa facilitated a Creative Idea Generation (CIG) session on the subject of low cost/no cost marketing.

CIG uses imaginative strategies to unlock and stimulate fresh thinking within participants in order to achieve innovation and generate authentic ownership of the results. The process is highly democratic, with participants generating, clustering, evaluating and action-planning their ideas together.

The results of the day were a number of ‘worked up’ actionable ideas which were democratically created, evaluated and refined by participants. You can also download an 'ideas toolkit' including all 480 ideas generated in the sessions below.

Additional attendee comments:

I thought this was one of the best workshops I've ever been to, very fun and inspiring and really made me want to go back to the office and start working on some of the ideas we had been working on.

I thought is was a good, creative, upbeat and fun session - just what we all needed I think. I also thought that generating ideas with other venues that work in very different ways was especially rich and thought that there maybe opportunities for small groups people who attended the session to get together again to work on generating ideas for real-life projects.

I really enjoyed myself and came away with some fantastic ideas.

Matthew Blyth, Marketing Manager, Arts Centre Washington

Really enjoyable - a fun, upbeat, enthusiastic and liberating session. A great way to creatively learn and, approach things, evaluation and techniques taught were good reference points forgetting started without lengthy tribulations and over-researched examples for projects. Useful and inspiring. More of the same please. Thanks

It was great in helping me to think differently about how I can approach marketing on minimal budget, came out with a few practical ideas.

Kirsty Bullock, Marketing Officer, mima

The course was very relevant to my job role and is something I might be able to implement in the future. It was very active workshop which was useful, and Lisa was very encouraging and brought a wealth of experience. The lunch was really nice and I though mima as a venue was very suitable for the training.
