Arts Council unveils new plan

Monday 6 October, 2008

Arts Council England has released its plan for 2008-11, which revolves around ‘Great Art for Everyone’.

This direction is not new for the organisation, which was founded in 1946 by John Maynard Keynes to ‘give courage, confidence and opportunity to artists and their audiences’, but has emerged as a core mission statement following the public consultation, or ‘arts debate’ which took place in 2006-07. It was clear from the findings that most people believe that the arts play an important role in the wellbeing of individuals and society as a whole.

This mission will be reflected in the Arts Council’s continued support for a range of artistic activities and by its investment in artistic experiences that enrich people’s lives.  £1.6 billion of public money will be invested by the Arts Council between 2008-11.

Effort will be focused on four priority areas:

  • Digital arts
  • Visual arts
  • Children and young people
  • London 2012

You can find out more about the plan here. Regional reports are expected within the next few weeks and we’ll keep you updated.
