Child Protection and Safeguarding

Monday 4 January, 2010

The Independent Safeguarding Authority (ISA) was created to help prevent unsuitable people from working with children and vulnerable adults. Since October 2009, the three former barred lists (POVA, POCA and List 99) have been replaced by two new barred lists, one for people prevented from working with children and one for those prevented from working with vulnerable adults, administered by the ISA rather than several Government departments. Information is taken from relevant criminal convictions, cautions, police intelligence and other appropriate sources.

From July 2010 all new workers or those moving jobs will have to be ISA-registered for the Vetting and Barring Scheme – employers will be responsible for stating the requirement of ISA registration in job adverts and checking potential employees’ ISA status. All other current staff will be phased into the scheme from 2011.
