Cultural Tourism (Billingham session)

Wednesday 14 May, 2008

Wednesday 14 May 2008, Wynyard Park, Billingham

Professor Mike Robinson, Director of the Centre for Tourism and Cultural change at Leeds Metropolitan University, will deliver this intensive half-day workshop aimed at strategic and management, Marketing and Customer Service personnel.

The session addresses the notion of cultural tourism and the ways in which it is being interpreted by the three main groups of stakeholders: Cultural Producers (referring to a very broad and diverse cultural sector); Tourism Intermediaries (those responsible for packaging and promoting ‘culture’) and; the Tourists (also defined as a very diverse and dynamic group).

Based upon research into the actual behaviour and practices of tourists, as well as the latest identified trends in cultural tourism and, drawing upon case studies and examples from UK, Europe and ‘beyond’, the session looks at the following issues:

  • Understanding tourism as a cultural experience - working with realities
  • Issues of communication – across space, across sectors, across ‘cultures’
  • Developing strategies to attract more visitors/tourists/audiences
  • Developing economies of scope
  • Looking outward and looking inward

The session will involve presentation, discussion and self/group reflection.

Cost: free to ANE members, £50 non-members
